I once wrote a whole paper on female characters in Gilded Age novels, the movement into the pubic sphere (which really started in earnest in the Victorian era, at least for middle class women) and the resultant need for women to act as mirrors for men's desire, largely manifested in their appearances. So, I went looking (unsuccessfully) for an article Gene Weingarten wrote for the Post about the differences inherent between Washington and New York and how it's absurd to compare the two, considering that DC is 1/8 the size of NYC.
